City of the World

My small contribution to the giant City of the World project in which various printmakers around the world carve a small piece and Maria Arango-Diener nobly co-ordinates, prints and sends out the final product, all married up. A labour of love indeed. Yes it has been carved in reverse, I flipped it in the computer. Called Graffiti, I felt that every city should have at least some tho' I wanted mine to share a positive note.

This blog has not been updated for nearly half a year, so what has been happening? I am working through an Open College of the Arts Printmaking course and here are some of the prints made during this time. Printmaking by post? Yes it not only is possible thanks to a really switched on tutor and great materials as guides and instructions, but it is really working. I needed feedback and a good kick to get out of an artistic rut, and I believe it to be time and money well spent. Mind you it does take quite a bit of time.

The Cherry tree print was made for an online group Barenforum to help raise funds for the Japanese after the earthquakes and Tsunami in March; called 'Alone' . Next to it is 'Pompeii Memory', followed by Maiden Castle and lastly Avebury Mystery.

London exhibitions

Intensive trip to London, saw the Glasgow Boys at the Royal Academy, http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/glasgow-boys , Paul Cezanne's the card players at the Courtauld and Drawings at the British Museum.

The Cezanne little exhibition had collected together many drawing, tryouts, studies etc connected to Cezanne attempting to create a 'proper academy' picture for posterity. While at the BM as usual I popped into the Japan Gallery and thought you would enjoy the two Hokusai on show. The pictures were chosen as Winter pictures and Hokusai was 88 years old when he did them. Which reminds me does everyone know the little book 'The Old Man Mad About Drawing' A Tale of Hokusai written by Francois Place originally in French (Le vieux fou de dessin)? US ed pub in 2004 by David R. Godine, Boston . French ed pub by Editions Gallimard Jeuness, Paris in 1997. It is wholly enchanting and contains a beautifully simply explanation of woodblock printing.

Have done some monoprints and am trying to get myself to do at least one drawing a day. Have a wonderful year everyone.

Turning over new leaves

This monthly blog can show no new work as my unhappy body is still in recovery mode. All is improving and I have been swimming again, albeit very gently. The whole experience has forced a 'who am I and where am I going' rethink. At one point I thought I could never make art again, which brought realisation of how important it is to me. Now I am more hopeful, and have been wanting to kickstart a new search for individuality and originality, rather than the focus on technique which has marked the previous decade.

As a result, I have signed up for an Open College of Arts Printmaking remote learning course. I am hoping this will give me both feedback and direction, and make me work harder at keeping sketchbooks and digging deeper for that elusive origionality. http://www.oca-uk.com/

I am also working my way through the book 'The Artist's Way' by Julia Cameron pub by Jeremy Tarcher/Putnam ISBN 1585421464 2002. The language is a bit New Age over the top, but many of the ideas are helpful. The author recommends writing a daily 'stream of conscousness' words. I haven't done this since I was 18 and influenced by Virginia Woolf but hey.. it's fun! I hope to add random drawings to this mix, but am stuck at present, so am working through a very basic book 'The Complete book of Drawing' by Barrinton Barber instead. This provides exercises which I hope will loosen me up. Page 1 suggested a different way of holding the drawing stick which was a surprise.

So in summary, I have thrown myself into another adventure, which those that know me will recognise as something I need to do quite regularly in my life. I will send postcards along the way. Meanwhile some pictures from snowy Dorset.

Exhibition continued

Just a few extra images of some of my work and the exhibition space. We are in an old farm building ( now a Garden Centre) in what has now become Poundbury, the community that the Duchy of Cornwall is building to provide funds for the Prince of Wales. Prince Charles likes coming to Dorset and is a frequent visitor bringing town planners etc to see some of the ideas demonstrated in Poundbury.

Winter exhibition

Some weeks ago I fell off a stile walking the Dorset countryside, and various parts of me complained and the shoulder seized up altogether and has been very painful. The good news is that the Chiropractor is getting me mobile again slowly, and I am beginning to believe that I may still work at the art again.. one day.

With a lot of help from husband and fellow exhibitors the attached image shows that I did manage to get my part of the exhibition up. As I could not mount, frame etc I have added my chinese brushwork paintings to the prints as these were all ready from a previous show. Now all we need is to sell something!

This is the largest white line print I have attempted, approx 22inches by 33inches. Looking at another aspect of West Bay in Dorset UK. This shows part of the beach, cliffs and the boat going out to sea from the harbour. I have had great fun doing it.

Have been having another go at white-line printmaking. This is a small port on the Dorset Coast called West Bay. There is still a fishing fleet there, and I hope to be creating more images from the area.

Am finding it all hard going at the moment, probably the usual autumn blues as I wonder why I am not living in a place with no winter. The printmaking challenge helps to keep me going. Hope all well out there!

Had a stand at an arts & crafts show at the George Albert Hotel, very quiet but as always interesting to have people's comments. Felt a bit down afterwards as sales were low even though I had slashed the prices.

So back to the studio. This is a white line print Mont St. Victoire. I find it impossible to make consecutive prints identical using the white line technique,as one is basically painting them on to the wood, with varying results. I have currently started numbering them as A/P1 + date A/P2+date etc. Does anyone have some better ideas?

Finally have done some work in the studio. Up against deadlines as the grandchildren are back at the end of this week. Finally had a go at whiteline in preparation for a Xmas card. A local church. The angelic minstrals are stone carvings inside the same building, I thought they looked rather fun all playing away together instead of being stuck up on separate pillars as they are in reality.

Have been to France for the last few weeks, and found some interesting ideas. In Avignon in a small collection, found some work by Gleizes and white line prints by Derain.

Will post later with more news. If anyone is in London, the British Museum Print Room has a stunning free exhibition of Chinese prints from the earliest Diamond sutra to contemporary. A must see if you can.

Dorset Art Weeks exhibition is finally over, and the packing up is nearly done. Good to get feedback and to see the work up, but not a lot of visitors or sales. Still it is good to review the work and to see where I've been and plan where to go!

Madrid and British Museum

Came across these Japanese style cloud trees in Madrid. Most unexpected! We looked at some wonderful art there.

A recent London trip saw us at the Van Gogh exhib, well worth even the 2 hour queue. The on to Cornelissen the art pigment people to stock up. The good news is that they are planning to set up a website with ordering: http://www.cornelissen.com/ It is a small shop full of character (and helpful staff). I always half expect Turner or someone historic to walk in.

On to The British Museum print room to see Mexican prints. Stunning collection, and of course upstairs to the Japan rooms.

Stockton, NSW Pelicans

Finally this is the result of hard labour. I used a machine made Hosho paper in the end. It has really not turned out as I wanted as I seemed to have slipped backwards in the technique, perhaps I am getting over ambitious. Next time I will go for something smaller!

The image is of Pelicans who have come to roost in the early evening. The lights are solar powered, and the place is at the entrance to Newcastle harbour, about a 100 miles north of Sydney.

Power carver

I have a new toy. I wanted to use these large ply boards which have been sitting around the studio for far too long. However, the sheer size was daunting, so Tara! enter the power carver into my life. I love it, and can use it with either hand, which is a bonus.

If any reader can give any hints and tips I would be grateful especially about sharpening. At the moment I am stropping on my leather barber's strop, each time I change the blade, but I don't think it will enough in the long run. I have Japanese water stones, and the Tormek water cooled sharpening system available to use.

Am working on an image of the Pelicans sitting sentinal along the Stockton Breakwall looking over to Newcastle NSW Australia. We visited my brother who lives that way. Will post when more is done.

Have been having a lot of difficulty with the latest print. Imagined as a Dorset Beauty in the tradition of the Japanese beauty series, the print has fallen sadly short of my aspirations. Here are the blocks and 2 of many attempts using different paper. One effort used the lino 'background' block in blue and the other not using that block. I ended up adding hand touching to add more to the girls' features and to the range of colours in the sweets.

This has all taken far too long with not very satisfactory results. I have decided to walk away from it for a while, go into another project and maybe come back to it.

Wellworths is a shop which grew out out the ashes of the closed Woolworths in our town. Managed by a brave lass who has worked her way up in the original store from a Saturday girl. A shining beacon of get up and go in these difficult times.

It seems many of us have been too busy to update these blogs, I am sorry it has been so long. I had a great week in Amsterdam especially looking again at how much Vincent Van Gogh learned from Japanese prints. Have just returned from a few days in London, mainly to see the Turner exhibition, and how much he too learned from other artists.

I also caught the Bankside print exhibition and found that both Sue and Andy from BarenForum had great work on display. I hope sales are good, and it was exciting to feel part of the printing family. Louise from Toronto visited for the day, and it was all too short but great to actually meet a Baren member.

I am in the throes of creating a web site (on Louise's advice). Only got to page one but it will grow. http://www.jenniferscabin.co.uk I was proud of myself, until I saw the stunning e-book that Dave had created. That man is a paragon and an example to us all.

I am still carving away at my modern Dorset beauty, but find it hard to keep the separations in my head with so many interupts.

Going through my finished work looking for pictures to display at the local Art Club show, I wondered about this question of personal style. We are told to find one but can we see if it is there, and does it matter?

First print is in Bristol 'The North - Slowly Waking from Deep Sleep' Chinese artist Yu Chengyou. woodblock print using oil based inks 66.7 x 80.1 cm

The second is one of mine going on show locally.

Anyone near Bristol (UK) should see the Royal West of England International Print Exhibition, it is great and no queues, unlike the Banksy show just down the hill!

Pictures in the Park

Sunday was spent with the local Art Club displaying paintings and prints on the railings along the Borough Gardens. There was a Leukemia fund raising event going on, which included a full day's programme of live Swingtime music. A great day out. This was my little stand.

Am trying to drum up interest in using empty shops for short term displays by artists in the town. Useful advice is sought!

Mallorca

Family and the house etc have eaten my time, and a swollen leg slowed me down. The leg is on the mend finally and energy levels are returning. (If you are taking statins and feel tired and aching.. then STOP the pills!). We had a three generation family holiday on the north west coast of Mallorca in glorious weather. Have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable week in Firenze and a day in Pisa. Am having difficulty walking at present as a knee is playing up, but managed to see and experience many of the wonderful sights, and there was always a good church to sit and rest in.

The art making has gone on hold for a short while while I prepare some boards for a presentation on Japanese style printmaking for a local art club.

London British Museum

Have just spent three days in London, catching up on art shows and museums. However well we plan, the highlights were accidental discoveries. There is a lesson there somewhere!

Trying to find a small exhibition on tribal people of the Himalayas, we were directed on a detour through the Japan Gallery. This proved to include an exhibition of Japanese prints selected by the artist Julian Opie.

The show has had no publicity that I found, but here are some of my favourites

Julian Opie also contributed one of his own work, which was inspired by the collection. This was a computer generated illuminated panel on which the branches moved up and down as if in a breeze, and there was a sparkle on the water. The still shot below loses the effect.

The other lucky happening was walking past the theatre with Mama Mia playing, and getting a last minute ticket. A full house and what great atmosphere. A real feel-good pick up on a cold winter evening.

Lastly I will let the snowman in the garden say goodbye.

Winter fun

Although the blog has been quiet, I am still busy in the studio. The Buddha in the tree is an image of a real tree in Thailand, which I first saw some 35 years ago. I have created this print for the Barenforum exchange which had self portrait combined with tree as the topic. I intend that this is a portrait of the inner self demonstrating the ability to root wherever I find myself, making the best of what is available, and the development of the Buddha within.

The second print, called Winter Offering, the Barenform members will recognise as having been heavily inspired by Annie Bissett's wonderful Stars print. It was done to assist the local Museum http://www.dorsetcountymuseum.org/ to raise funds by selling cards. The object is to purchase a stunning hoard of over 400 bronze age axes found at Langton Matravers (in Dorset UK). They were buried brand new at the time and may possibly have been the gift to the gods. I have given them a December sky as it seemed to me to be logical that it might be the winter equinox, that people would plead with the sun to come back.

There has been discussion on the barenforum about protecting hands from seizing up using carving tools, so I am showing the hand protection I use, bought in a sports store and designed I assume, for tennis players. I have also strapped my hangi-to with tennis raquet strapping to make it easier to grasp.

Brewing ideas

The Barenforum group have set the topic for a print exchange to combine Portrait with Tree as a theme. Ideas abound, and I stand contemplating the strangest trees. The emerging theme for me is to create an image of the inner me rather than an external portrait of what someone looks like to the outside world. As always I have a beautiful image in my head, and have done some drawings, and a series of thumbnail sketches for colour separations. THIS is my very favorite part of the process, before the picture in my head has to compare with a rather less than good image on paper! I have stocked up on paper and blocks. I still have not identified a suitable source of cherry yet. I went over to Martock in Somerset, They have American Cherry but a great deal of work would have to go on their planks. I may have a go at their bowl blanks one day for a circular piece. If any of the UK based bareners have a solution I would be grateful.

The family with grandchildren are coming down for half term, so actual work has stopped while I blitz the house and make up beds. But colour choices and image problem solving are still going on in my head.

Among my other travels I joined a two day relief printmaking course with Peter Ursem. He was using lino, oil based ink and a nipping press. Sadly I was badly lacking sleep, being somewhat jet lagged, but as always I learnt as much from watching him work as well as his helpful guidance. vinyl experiments with owl

I learn everyday and hope one day to do some more acceptable work. This experiment was using vinyl floor covering. I begged an offcut from a neighbour who had done his kitchen floor. It cuts so easily it is a joy. Obviously it will not do very fine lines, but after a light sanding took pencil and carbon paper marks very clearly. I also used it to make an embossing plate. The latter is the last plate in the sequence. It is reversed as I printed it from underneath with the paper still damp.

I used the usual dry pigments with water. The paper was very absorbant and I brushed gum arabic on the embossing plate to ensure that the embossing held its' shape. I am not too sure about the latter as it seems perhaps a bit too strong, but time will tell if it settles down. Maybe I will dilute the gum arabic another time, it really all depends on the paper.... another whole topic about which I am still very much a beginner.

Yesterday spent the day in London. The Cezannes in the Courtauld (Somerset House) are well worth seeing, as also their print exhibition of French 19Century artists French prints from Manet to Picasso. A simply amazing double bill, plus the usual wonderful collection of French Impressionists. As a viewing experience it beats The Hermitage. I recommend it to any visitors in London this summer. www.somersethouse.org.uk/visual_arts

The next stop was the Royal Academy http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/ the summer exhibition had some very interesting prints of all kinds, but found no moku hanga, There too is an exhibition of Vilhelm Hammershoi:Poetry of Silence. Stunning work. I emerged feeling I had just been through a long Scandinavian winter where a gleam of light gains huge significance, and a sunbeam carries pure joy.

At last have got back to studio work. After the Open Studio two weeks, we went on a cruise with Voyages of Discovery to the various Baltic stops. It is an educational trip with lectures as well as visits, and I can recommend the trip. We were lucky with weather etc. Saw some really good art, and overloaded on gold rococco.

Have also ben to Hastings http://www.hmag.org.uk/ to see the Japanese Print exhibition. We had to stay over in the area longer than planned as they went on strike for 2 days (along with the rest of UK local government). It made us look at Rye and other interesting places in the area. They have run out of the catalogue, but reprinting is promised. Worth a visit if anywhere in the area and goes on until 5 October.

Thought I would have a go at Microprints to see how I went, with the view of entering some in a UK Microprint exhibition if any turn out well. This is the first which I tried using lino with watercolours and paste. It is the London Eye at night with fireworks taken from across the river on the Embankment, with the Victorian street light. Not sure how successful it is, but at least I am back working again. I freehanded the colours, and should probably carved the locations more accurately as the street light in some is white and some is yellow! The image is 8cms square.

Next week am in Cornwall being Granny for a week, but am still very much reading the forum posts and following your blogs. As always I have more pictures in my head than I get down into reality.

Sunday night and the end of the 2 week Open Studio show. Made one more sale (of Buddha Walking) to a Buddhist friend. Went for a walk by the sea at Weymouth this evening.

The print of Buddha walking is a simple 2 block moku hanga. One for the colour and one for the raised impression.

A couple more sales, both relief prints. The first Dorset View, was not a result of poor registration, but an attempt to reflect the land use in Dorset over thousands of years. As you look across our landscape one can see the lines where hedges and tracks have once been, and this is what I was trying to capture. The brown one I called Tracks, is another attempt to express much the same idea in a more abstract way. Another three exhibition days to go, will decide if it was all worthwhile then!

Dorset Art Weeks starts on Saturday. (Today being Thursday afternoon). I had a panic that the disadvantage of a garden studio is that people walk through the garden Doh! So have done a massive catch up on the veggie patch, sowing seeds and bought some tomato plants from the Sunday Boot Market for the greenhouse. It has all been neglected for the sake of Art this year, so cheating seems fair.

In addition to the cabin studio We have put up a tent and my husband is making some display boards to put in it. He found some white faced 'Finnish fiber board', so it all looks bright and clean. Not ready to hang pictures yet so tomorrow will be a busy day.

For anyone in the area of southern England, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in the Old Town Hall are going to put on what looks to be an interesting showing of Japanese Prints, from 21 June - 05 October http://www.hmag.org.uk/

My own plans are progressing and we have set up a small display in the town library to promote the brochure for Dorset Art Weeks. Meanwhile I am still pricing. I have roped in my husband to make up some boards and the material for a prototype is coming tomorrow. Will photo them if they work out.

We had the children and grandchildren down for a wet weekend, but managed to get to a kite flying competition on Weymouth Beach and to the local Roast hog and fete on the village green in Fordington.

Have just had a few days in Bruges, which is just full of good Flemish art. It is such an inspiring place I hope to capture a sense of the place in a print later.

Framing past work

Have spent the last two months matting and framing. These are some monoprints dug out from the attic. I just love the mad freedom of working quickly on glass, using oil based printing ink and white spirit.

Have discovered a local source of 'seconds' handmade paper with rose petals etc incorporated. Would be interested in any one has experience of using this somewhat thicker paper with watercolour pigments and baren printing. Am keen to practice, but must get the last of the framing finished.

There are local exhibitions coming up to work in tandem with the Dorset Art Weeks, so I plan to try my hand at entering some of the work, if only to see if they pass the jury selection!

Sorry, this monoprint has come out sideways, the family are coming back soon for a meal so no time to sort.

Have just returned from a week in Oporto in North Portugal. Seeds for some future prints, I hope.

Half term is coming so must sort out the house, then plan to have marathon sessions framing and matting in preparation for showing. Going through earlier work is interesting. A lot I threw away, but some which I did not rate much at the time, seem more interesting. I hope to post a few in a couple of weeks, and would love some comments.

Have just returned from a Retreat week with a group of Buddhists who follow the teachings of the Vietnamese zen monk Thich Nhat Hanh. It was great to be able to take time out to focus, and I enjoyed it all.

I have been reading the Art Festival Guide by Maria Aranho. It is so full of good sense and I feel much more settled about what I must do in preparation for showing the work. I would recommend this book to anyone starting up in the business of selling their work to the public.

Back for a few days and then we are off to Portugal (Oporto) for a week, where I hope to see some contemporary art.

Hope to fill in on more information as time goes by. In a few days I am going for a mediation retreat for a week in a converted farm with no central heating. This being a cold wet winter in the UK is quite a challenge. My mind is more on warm blankets than art just now.
